Nonviolent Communication Premise and Intent
Nonviolent Communication is based on the premise that:
- We are all trying to get our needs met.
- We fare better if we know how to get these needs met in a cooperative
rather than an aggressive way.
- Each of us has remarkable inner resources if we are given empathy to
get in touch with them.
The Intention of this model/process is to offer skills to:
- Achieve and maintain satisfying connections.
- Get our needs met in a way that does not violate ourselves or others.
- Remedy communication that has been painful or unsuccessful.
The Process:
- State our observation of an interaction or event without judgment or
evaluation.
- Separate thoughts from feelings.
- Express what we think, need and want. Practice active listening to hear others' ideas, needs, and wants without judging them.
- Focus on the difference between requests and demands.
- Present our requests in "doable" action language.
- Relinquish a solution-based "fix it" position in communication.
Special Uses:
- Self Empowerment
- Conflict Resolution
- Bridging Cultural Differences
- Harmonious Relationships
- Team Building
- Cooperative Learning
- Objective Evaluations
Results:
- Resolve feelings of anger, guilt, shame, fear, and frustration.
- Redirect anger energy toward coalition building, cooperative outcomes.
- Create solutions based on safety, respect, and consensus.
- Meet basic individual, family, school, community and societal needs.
